Happy Halloween (Tag)

Tomorrow is HALLOWEEN!!

Tonight is trick-or-treating in my town & I’m so excited. I carved some pumpkins last night for the big day! Also, Saturday is our annual Halloween party so stay tuned for pics from that!

For today’s post I’m borrowing this Halloween tag from Stephanie. I’m adding to it, though.

Favorite Halloween movie? Beetlejuice. I don’t know if that’s considered Halloween or just creepy- but I love it.
Least Favorite Halloween movie? I don’t watch any slasher flicks, so I guess those would be my least favorite. Also… Hocus Pocus isn’t my favorite at. all. I know I’m in the minority here.

Favorite Halloween (or Halloween adjacent) song? Dave Matthews Band has a song called Halloween that I love.
Least Favorite Halloween song? I don’t really like Black Magic Woman or Somebody’s Watching Me. But I honestly don’t feel that strongly about it. Lol

Favorite candy? I don’t love candy but Twix bars, runts (the bananas!), and gobstoppers.
Least favorite candy? Candy corn is ew. Whoopers are ew. Peppermint Patties are ew. There’s a TON of candy I don’t like…

Favorite costume you’ve worn? Oh man… I don’t know. I’ve been Wednesday Addams & loved it. I was a Rockford Peach one year with Kyle as Jimmy Dugan. I’ve loved the majority of my costumes. My mom made me a princess dress one year- it was awesome. I’m SO excited for our costumes this year!!
Least favorite costume? My freshman year of college I went to a party and I was a “sexy librarian.” I was actually a mess and I HATE that I went with that. First because of the stupid “sexy” adjective but also because the costume suuuuuuuuuuucked. Shame on freshman Audrey.

Favorite Halloween related activity? As an adult, it’s our annual Halloween Party 🙂 I’ve always looked forward to decorating the house, trick-or-treating, and carving pumpkins.
Least favorite activity? I honestly thought I’d love passing out candy but our neighborhood is dull. Hopefully as they continue to develop it we get more kids!

Favorite Halloween decor item?  I just bought a vulture this year and I love him!! I named him Edgar. (I got him from Target.) I love all my decorations!
Least favorite…? Who are we kidding. I only keep the stuff I love and I love it all.

Favorite Halloween memory?  I remember getting dressed every year and setting out into the neighborhood with my parents and brother. We’d always run into friends in the neighborhoods behind our house, and then I’d creep around with them. We were the only kids on our street so our neighbors put together HUGE bags of candy and full size bars for us. It was great!
Also, my mom has always been SUPER into Halloween and I think that’s where I get it from. She still dresses up each year and goes all out in her 1st grade classroom!

I hope everyone has a safe & spooky & spectacular Halloween!

Halloween 101

Some people don’t do Halloween and some people are professional Halloween-ers. I believe I fall into the latter category. Since the blog world is all about sharing how-tos, I decided today was the perfect day for a How To ~Halloween~ post.

(1) First things first… You need to get in the Halloween spirit (pun intended). Halloween movies come in all forms of scariness…

Less Scary: Hotel Transylvania, Monster House, Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice, and obviously It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (airing Sunday at 8pm on ABC)

Moderately Scary: Sleepy Hollow, The Shining, IT (the 1990 one)

I’d recommend some horror/scary movies but I don’t watch them… lol. You don’t have to love horror to love Halloween 😉

Freeform (cough*ABC Family*cough) always disappoints me with their 13 Nights of Halloween, but if you’d like to check out that list you can find it here

(2) Now it’s time to figure out your costume…

Some super simple costumes include: cat, witch, a Grecian goddess or Medusa, a princess, or this scarecrow.

Check these out, too…

(3) If you’re hosting a party this year* you’ll need a few snacks & drinks:

*obviously you don’t need to host anything to enjoy these snacks

(Here are the posts from our Halloween Parties in 2014, 2015, & 2016!)

(4) My go-to places for Halloween decorations include HomeGoods, Marshalls, JoAnn Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, and any local craft show or fall festival.

With every holiday and every year I promise this ledge will get better 🙂

In need of some music? This is a Spotify playlist from Alexandra rocks!

What are some must-haves for your Halloween season? Do you have any big plans this weekend? Our annual party is Saturday night and I’m so excited!!

Halloween Costumes | Part 3

Three days until Halloween!! The rest of my week consists of last minute costume details, pumpkin carving, house cleaning, and food prepping! In hindsight, I should’ve written a post about dog costumes, especially since Ly & Enzo will be adorable this year, but I just didn’t have the time/interest. I did write a few costumes posts and a party-prep article:

Today I will share some last minute costumes that are easy to assemble and can be made with household staples or a quick trip to the store!

Cat
Last night our local mall had a two hour trick-or-treat event. Since I work part-time at a retail store there I was lucky enough to be scheduled & pass out candy! I had to come up with a costume fast and my mom just happened to have ears and a tail in her costume box. Add some black clothes, a little make-up, and voila!

Medusa
In college I had the genius idea to buy a white bed sheet, find some plastic snakes at the dollar store, and experiment with fake lashes. Medusa was a super easy costume to whip together in a day!

Cowgirl
Everyone has a flannel shirt. Hat and boots are optional so long as you can braid in some pigtails and dot your cheeks with freckles! (I actually dress like this sometimes (sans the freckles), so it’s not really a costume to me… haha.)

Ninja Turtle
This one takes a little more effort, but my friend Sarah made these costumes with some ribbon, green shirts, and paint!

A Witch
If you don’t have a witch’s hat lying around I bet you can find one at ANY store this time of year. Spice things up and use some hair chalk to turn your locks green or glue beetles to nylon stockings and make people squirm!

In case you’re wondering, our costumes are coming along quite nicely. We have a local costume store in town that rents costumes so I have a green dress on hold for Saturday. Kyle’s costume is a DIY project and I think we finally have all the pieces.

He would be upset if I revealed his costume before the party so I’ll tell you about the dogs instead 🙂 Enzo will be Buzz Lightyear (a costumes that has served us well three years in a row) and Lylee is going as Crush the turtle from Finding Nemo!

Do you dress up your pets? Have you ever been a “monster” (i.e. witch, vampire, ghost) for Halloween?

Halloween Costumes | Part 2

I will admit “Part 2” almost didn’t happen. I’ve been so overwhelmed the last week and a half. This weekend is my birthday so hopefully I can calm down and spend the rest of October relaxing and enjoying the fall festivities! If you miss Part 1 of the costume series you can catch up here! Part 3 will be happening the Wednesday before Halloween!

Part 2 is all about you! Last week I talked about couples/group costumes but today we’re focusing on the individual. Not everyone wants to partner up and I totally get it- the more accolades for you and your creativity! 😉

Hipster Zombie
One year I had a Halloween Murder Mystery Party and I dictated the costumes. My brother was “Zedd Undeade”- a hipster zombie that owned a coffee shop. I’d say he pulled it off flawlessly with some gray paint and suspenders.

Biker Dude
My mom is a Halloween master. She helped my brother put together the zombie costume and her werewolf outfit is untouchable. Last year she decided to be a biker dude. My dad was so disturbed. I can’t blame him… the chest hair is just creepy!

Day of the Dead Skeletons
My friend Dana is the cutest. She’s crafty and creative and such a fun soul to be around! When she and her husband Jamie showed up last year as Day of the Dead skeletons I was SO impressed (but not the least bit surprised).

Older Version of Yourself
Kayla’s family owns a nursing home empire. I’m only kind of kidding. Her costume was a breeze to outfit since she had all the gear- including the apple juice-filled catheter. Ew!

An Owl, Dobby the House Elf, & Sushi
Amanda’s owl was a simple and warm costume (good for chilly Halloween nights), but super detailed with the patches of fabric!

Dana’s Dobby’s creativity at work again! Aren’t her ears the cutest?? 10 points to Ravenclaw!

Caroline made her costume just before we stepped out for the evening. She’s the most adorable little bite of sushi I’ve ever seen!

My husband brought a new Halloween costume idea to the table last weekend so now we might not do the couples thing. Good thing we starting talking about this in September! Ha!

What was your favorite Halloween costume as a child?
