We Are Spoiled.

*First of all, Happy Labor Day!* (Now on to the reason we’re spoiled…)

On Wednesday my husband and I finally took the plunge and put a central air conditioning unit in our house. We moved into our house almost two years ago and the past two summers we’ve relied on two window units (one in the living room, one in our bedroom). They did a great job, but in July our bedroom unit broke and we immediately spent $200 to replace it. Well, halfway through August the living room unit kicked the bucket. This window unit was going to be WAY more expensive to replace because it was a bigger engine/fan (?) that cooled the entire first level. K and I decided it was time to discuss a whole-house air conditioner.

Spoiled

Knowing that it would increase the value of our house slightly and most certainly bring a whole new level of comfort, we decided to go for it. Our Husky mix thanked us in advance. In comparison to a new window unit (which we were told are not made like they used to be and would only last 3 to 4 years… ain’t that how it always goes?), spending the money on a central a/c unit was the better choice for us.

But now I feel like a small, rustic piece of me is missing.

I used to pride myself on how low I could keep the interior temperature of our house while the exterior climbed with the hours. I loved the brisk a.m. hours when I’d open up all the doors and windows and trap as much crisp, morning air as I could before shutting it up against the grueling summer heat. I was mystified by the miracle of the ceiling fan, throwing cool dusk air across the room. Honestly, it was tough work keeping the house at a cool 82 degrees while the summer sun insisted on pushing 95 outside. (This was after the main level a/c busted… When it was working we could maintain a solid 74 degrees.)

Then again, I am a firm believer that Ohio summers are as harsh as our winters. (We had to replace the faulty furnace during our first winter.) This state can be a serious humid sweatbox and we don’t even have an ocean to escape to. And did I mention these late-summer allergies? I’ve also worried about how our future children will cope in a bedroom with direct sunlight and no window a/c unit. (Yeah, we could always buy one in the future but when does it stop, you know?! We’d need one for the bathroom and the kitchen and the….)

But I do feel spoiled because so many people live without a/c. I did for a few years in college. My parents’ house didn’t have it for the longest time. I spent 4 weeks in India (which is a very hot country, if you were curious) and only had a/c in the movie theaters. Honestly, by Wednesday I was fairly used to the heat.

Then again, that new a/c unit sitting on our back patio is a real beauty. Leaving the vents unobstructed all year round (instead of just Nov. through March when the heat is on) will be kind of nice. And my Easter get-togethers and summer parties will be a little more enjoyable now.

So instead of feeling spoiled I guess I will look at this as a blessing. Because it really is and I’m so thankful we could do this. Now we can break up the monotony of the “you take the dog out” fight with a “turn the air conditioner up/down!” argument!

Do you have central a/c? Have you ever gone without a/c? How do you cope with no air conditioning?

Summer Cleaning…?

It’s the moment of truth… Yesterday was the first day of summer (UGH) so it’s time to visit the Spring Cleaning List (originally posted here) and see what I didn’t did do…

XXX

Here’s the original list with my comments.

Clean out all 3 closets and donate clothes to local church (yeah, three closest… two belong to K) I actually did this!
– Organize craft room and finish almost-done scrapbooks Well poop… this would’ve been a fun task.
– Start & finish “Year 2” scrapbook I took a scrapbook hiatus I guess…
– Scrub the greasy build-up off kitchen cabinets and decor Eww… I didn’t do this but I really should.
Wash dog harnesses/leashes and replace Lylee’s harness Her harness was nearly broken so this actually got done!
Buy duvet cover and bed skirt for new bed CHECK! (Now I just need to put it on…)
Organize Pinterest boards I did about half of my boards so we’ll check it off… hehe
– Landscape the house/get out of the flood zone Ugh, this needs to happened but we didn’t get it done yet.
Paint the spare bedroom YESSS! Check it out here!
Finish the basement bathroom YEP!
Finish decorating the dining room I’d say it’s about how I want it to look.
– Figure out photo collage for stairwell No… I just can’t decide on this.
– Build a firepit and purchase patio furniture Ugh, part of the landscaping project.
– Throw out old/dried up pens, glue, art supplies, office stuff This would’ve been an easy one to complete.
– Shred all the random grocery bags of bills and documents No… oops.

Ok, so honestly, I didn’t do too badly. I can probably tackle most of these things this summer!

Did you get any major tasks done this spring? What chore have you been putting off? How often do you scrub the grease build-up in your kitchen (and what’s your secret weapon??)?

Sisterhood of the World: my first award!

Have I mentioned how much I love the blogging community? I’m still fairly new and inexperienced, but everyone is just so gosh darn nice! Yesterday I was nominated for the Sisterhood of the World: blogger award by Chelsea at the new wifestyle!

sisterhood

If you’ve ever visited my Xanga page (and you haven’t, thank GOODNESS), you know that I was once obsessed with surveys. Chelsea has given me a few questions to answer and it’s taking me right back to my survey-loving, emo-looking, side-swoped bangs middle school days. I’m so pumped!

. . .

what “made up” world from a book would you like to live in and obviously why?

Well, England and the rest of the UK actually exist, but I feel like Hogwarts counts as a superb answer. And if it doesn’t, I’d live in Wonderland with the Cheshire Cat and Mock Turtle.

would you rather have to sweat mustard or sneeze bees?

I won’t lie. I read this wrong. I thought it said sweet mustard… so then I started looking up what the heck “sneeze bees” were… HAHAHA! Ok, back to the question. Both of these things sound awful, but assuming the bees don’t sting on their way out, I would rather sneeze bees because A) the bee population is dying and I could help with that and B) I don’t like mustard and I don’t want to smell like it amd C) a sneeze goes so quick but you might be sweating for a long time!

what is one of your absolute favorite meals? (please include your dessert selection)

Restaurant-wise, I love me some good crab legs. (I’m also very conflicted about this because I know the cooking process is so gruesome and it makes me sad.) A Caesar salad followed by crab legs and a baked potato, finished off with some caramel cheesecake. I literally just described my order at Red Lobster. As far as meals at home go, my family loves to eat Raclette. It’s a Swiss dish where you use a little heater to melt cheese over potatoes. Technically you’re supposed to use Raclette cheese, but I don’t like that so we use all different kinds. Pair that with sausage and I’m in heaven. Ahhhh, now I’m so dang hungry!

Melt the cheese in the trays and cook little sausages on top! K and I just got one of these for Xmas!

if you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you do?

Open an animal shelter that didn’t have to turn away any homeless pets. Or I’d run an animal rehabilitation center for injured wildlife to get them back on their feet and into the wild again. Or an elephant sanctuary for retired elephants to live out their days in the most natural way possible. So, like, something to do with animal welfare and/or conservation 😉

what 80s or 90s sitcom would you want to live in?

Home Improvements. I wish I was kidding, but I’m not. I would star as Zachery Ty Bryan’s or Jonathan Taylor Thomas’ girlfriend. Sooooo stinkin’ cute!

what is something you would tell your high school self?

Be more confident! That guy you’re dating is going to marry you so stop with the jealousy/worry! Also, you are the perfect size, so quit thinking about your weight! And try to pick a direction before you go to college. Or don’t. College is a good time so stop worrying!

what is one of your most prized possessions? (pictures make things better)

Hands down, Bunny is my most prized possession. I mean, living-wise it’s K and the pups, but as far as inanimate objects, my stuffed rabbit. I have so many cool things from my adventures, but I have had Bunny my entire life.

His fur is a little matted and his nose is gone, but 24 years old is pretty old for a rabbit…

. . .

That was fun! Thanks, again, Chelsea! If you’d like to see her answers to some different questions check that out here!

My blogger nominations (if they choose to accept) are:

Christina @ The Daily Sugar
Rebecca @ Rebecca Chapman
Meghan @ Meghan Anna
Danielle @ The Lifestyle Project

And here are you questions!

What song makes you have to stop what you’re doing and dance every single time?

If you could transform into any animal for any amount of time, what animal would you be and for how long?

What’s your favorite holiday? Why?

Do you enjoy jokes? What’s the best joke you’ve ever told/heard?

You’re out to dinner and you run into a celebrity (alive or deceased). They say they’re up for anything and they’ll pay all evening! Who’s the celebrity and what are you guys going to do?!

What’s the last book/magazine/DVD cover that you read & really enjoyed?

Which creature do you wish existed today: dinosaurs or unicorns or horse-size kittens?

What’s your LEAST favorite color? Is there a reason?

These are the rules that have been passed down to me:
– Answer the questions from the person that nominated you.
– Nominate some of your blogging sisterhood- there is no set number for this!
-Ask your nominees some very important questions- again, no set number!

Have fun!

Easter Motivation: Home Improvements

For the first time in a long time I’ve been slacking this week blog-wise… oops! I have a good reason, though!

This Sunday we will be hosting Easter for K’s family. Our house is average size and in pretty good condition, but we decided that we wanted to finish some of our big projects before Easter. This means we’ve been busting our butts to get some stuff done!

I am so, so, so pleased to announce that our spare bedroom is FINALLY painted & furnished!

We want to paint a light yellow horizontal stripe around the room mid-way down (or up?) the wall, but I’m just so pleased that the room is useable and pretty!

Not great lighting in the morning… the walls are light green!

Additionally, my husband and I finally said enough is enough and got the materials to finish our half-bathroom that we’d torn apart MONTHS ago. Again, we still are planning to add (shelves above the toilet) but now the bathroom has a fresh coat of paint, a beautiful vanity, a centered mirror, and nifty lights.

My friend Kayla came over a few weeks ago and we knocked out the painting part!

Found this nifty little trick on Pinterest. Covered the toilet with a trashbag!

Finished product!

The bedroom was my project (with the help of my momma) and the bathroom was more of K’s project. We are horrible at working together professionally, but on a personal level we’re an all-star team.

A week ago I also coaxed K into hanging some of our new-ish artwork and spruce up his office area.

I LOVE this corner of the dining room. Also, my incredible husband BUILT me this wine rack two Christmases ago. Not from a kit... he designed, built, and stained it.

Again, horrible lighting, but here's the new organized corner in K's office.

I just feel like such a HUGE weight has been lifted because we can check these things off the list! On to the landscaping!

K is usually super busy with his business (and things are about to get crazy again), but I’m so grateful I could steal his attention for these last 2 weeks to get some stuff done!

Do you have any home improvement projects looming over your head? How’s your Spring Cleaning list going? Seriously though, how amazing is that wine rack? (Taking advantage of bragging rights! Sorry!)
