Sadly, my husband and I rarely go to the movies. There are new releases that I’d like to see, but the movies are expensive and K gets fussy about sitting in a theater for +2 hours. I think the last movies I saw were Inside Out/Minions at the drive-ins with my little cousins last summer…
On a totally unrelated note, I am a 90’s child and I grew up with 90’s cartoons and toys and the lingo… but since I was so young I missed out on some of those great 90’s teen-targeted movies. Since I can’t recommend the latest superhero movie on the big screen, I offer you 6 movies from the 90’s that you should see:
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
If you haven’t see this movie then I’m shocked. I feel like this film (and She’s All That) totally exude 90s culture- plus Heath Ledger *swoon*. This film is based on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” and it’s just a really cute, clever movie. Bad boy likes uninterested girl… he woos her… romance ensues… You get it.
A League of Their Own (1992)
K would’ve refused to marry me if I didn’t like this movie. He loves it and quotes it at least once a week. We’re not big sports fans in our house, but we really enjoy baseball movies. I find Geena Davis to be a stunning actress and this movie has other big names like Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, and Madonna!
Batman Forever (1995)
We just watched this on Monday night & I am such a sucker for the 90’s Batman movies! While Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman- sorry George Clooney/Val Kilmer/Christina Bale- I love all the actors in this film, especially Jim Carrey as the Riddler.
Se7en (1995)
I feel like I’m progressively getting darker with these movie suggestions… This film is rated R, but it’s due to strong language (they say the f-word 74 times…) and graphic crime scenes. As far as I can recall, there isn’t brutal violence. This is back when Brad Pitt was so cute it hurt. I don’t usually like thrillers, but this is a good one.

Notting Hill (1999)
Back to light and airy movies. This is another favorite of my husband’s- solid proof that he has a soul. I kid, I kid. He’s the one that introduced me to this film and brought the glamor of Julia Roberts into my life. I used to dislike her for no reason, but this movie turned all that around for me.
Hook (1991)
Anything Robin Williams did in the 90s is gold (Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, Aladdin), but this film has the best message about growing up and family and what’s important in life. And it also has Maggie Smith, which automatically makes it great.
You’ll notice that some big 90’s films are missing from my list (The Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, American Beauty)… that’s because I hate those movies and I’ll never recommend them. I know I’m in the very small minority here. They make me feel sad and anxious, so they’re forever on my “no” list.
Since we rarely go out to the movies, I’d love to hear what your 90s suggestions might be! Have you seen these films? What would you recommend?

The only others I’d add are Clueless(1995), Drop Dead Gorgeous(1999). Such great classic 90s movies!

Hmm, I’ve never seen/heard of Drop Dead Gorgeous! I just looked it up and there are so many BIG names! I’ll have to check it out! It kinda looks like Jawbreakers, lol! Thanks for the recommendation!

Hook – an all time favorite!
10 Things I hate about you… makes me so sad to watch & miss Heath Ledger…. I love the soundtrack from that movie

Honestly, the worst part about 10 Things… is the fact that Health Ledger is gone. I remember being SO sad when I heard about that!

awww this list made me so nostalgic! (confession: i have never seen ‘a league of their own’ but know i NEED to because i’d love it). they really say the F-word 74 times in ‘seven?!” i hope you found this out via a tally or drinking game (but a game played only with very small sips).

A League of Their Own is the greatest. I love it so much! Probably our favorite movie growing up (and still) was Three Men and a Little Lady. That may be late 80’s… But it’s so, so good. We wore out the VHS. Also we loved Hocus Pocus. The best!

I’ve never seen Three Men and a Little Lady, but I’ll check it out. I think I’m the only 90s kid that hates Hocus Pocus… haha! I think it’s just SO overplayed in October so I always find myself switching channels.

Ha, it is a long time to sit and do nothing, I guess… We have a local theater that plays 2 or 3 films, but we have to drive 35 minutes north to go to the big theater so that’s a deterrent as well.

Among the ones you’ve listed, Se7en is the only movie I’ve never heard of! I would add Harriet the Spy and The Parent Trap to your list!

Yes yes to The Parent Trap! I’ve never seen Harriet the Spy, actually. Se7en is the one unlike the others up there 😉 I hate violence in film/tv so it’s unusual that I come across a thriller or horror film that I enjoy, but I do find Se7en to be a good one!

I love Hook. I recently found out that my dad HATES the movie. I think it’s because he worked a lot when I was growing up and it makes him feel bad (though he was always at my baseball games so I definitely don’t compare him to Peter, lol). After I put it on my list I kept saying, “Ruuuufiiiiioooooo!” in my head! Haha!

10 Thing I Hate About You is one of my ALL TIME favorite movies! My English teacher played it one week in high school, and I’ve loved it ever since. Notting Hill is right up there, too. Anything with Hugh Grant, really. I also love Clueless, Never Been Kissed, and Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion. That movie cracks me up. Is it bad that I’ve never seen any of the other movies you’ve listed? Don’t answer that. Although, my high school French teacher put on A League of Their Own in French. I have no idea what happened 😉

I haven’t seen 10 Things I Hate About You in such a long time. After I made this list I realized that I need to re-watch most of these movies! Romy & Michelle’s almost made the cut 🙂 You definitely need to see A League of Their Own. It’s a really, really good film! Hook, too!

I think we re-watch it every time it’s on TV! Haha! We love baseball movies. On our honeymoon we took a cruise and they played a bunch of baseball movies at night on the lido deck and it was so fun to lay out on chairs and watch them!

Save the Last Dance was my favorite movie forever– and I love Clue too– definitely have it on DVD, haha. I’ve still never seen American Beauty! This was such a fun post!

A League of Their Own is one of my absolute, all-time favourite films EVER. I love it. And 10 Things I Hate About You as well. Another favourite 90s film (and overall favourite film) is The Crow. And Edward Scissorhands juuust about sneaks in as a 90s film – it was released in 1990.

The Crow might be too violent for your tastes – it’s literally the story of someone who comes back from the dead to take revenge on the people who killed him and his fiancé! I love it though.
